Dear Ms. Hollander,
I feel like I know you -- you were once a major part of my life. No, we've never met or corresponded, instead, it was your book "Happy Hooker" that helped me realize that it was okay and acceptable to not only be who I am (I am transgendered) but also to accept my own sexual tastes. That and that writing frankly and descriptively about sex was also acceptable. In short, you freed me.
Of course, no one can know anyone merely from a book, especially when it is a purloined one that they grabbed when they were thirteen years old and not supposed to be reading adult materials. But...your writing and later your columns and your other works all said the same thing: it's okay. That's important to know when you're young and you live in a repressive society like the old South of the US in the Bible Belt.
So thanks. Were it not for 'Happy Hooker' I'd have never had the courage to leave home in heels and a dress. Nor would I have had the courage to have the kinds of experiences those led to. Instead I would have been confused, closeted and very unhappy. That's a dangerous set of feelings when you belong to a demographic that has a 41% rate of attempted suicides.
I hope your life is a happy one these days, and I see you are still a very interesting person. As an adult, I can now appreciate the range of your tastes and influences, and I must say that they are impressive in their own right. We have much in common. Take care, and I hope you do not mind my fawning...I am not one given to writing fan letters, but in your case I felt it appropriate to offer gratitude.

For some reason I was thinking about you the other day, Xaviera. Remember Penthouse in London back in 1973? I was the editor of the UK edition. I'm a little older now but I still remember what fun you were.

I'm an English professor of almost exactly your age, so I couldn't give your website a 5 as that would not constitute any one of the Best Teaching Practices.
Just this week made reference to your name in class because several of my students are Hollanders...from Holland, MI of course. Irony is the spice of literature, yes?
You really helped me when I was younger. Wanted to thank you for that. Got me over the hump as it were, though that skirmish has yet to see a resolution.
Perhaps you will write back.

greetings to the lovely Xaviera Hollander..I want to let you know i am a huge fan of your column in penthouse. It was a great source of information in a wide variety of human sexuality. I truly hope that the column makes its way to paperback form.

I was born in 1945. You, your message, work, writing, grabbed me from the moment I found you, decades ago.
Bravo and kudos for your courage, your passion, for shattering the dogma about women that serves no one.
Almost sixty six, these times are the creme de la creme of life. I wrote my book to show that a woman's age has nothing to do with her sexuality. To awaken women to this truth and gift is why I write and speak out.
How lovely to find you again after all these years.
