THE HAPPY HOOKER, PORTRAIT OF A SEXUAL REVOLUTIONARY

With her autobiographic book ‘The Happy Hooker’ - the story of her life as New York’s most famous Madame in 1971, Xaviera Hollander became an instant best selling author. This documentary is a screened explicit rendition of her life as New York’s most famous Madame.

Following the war, Xaviera’s family moved back to Amsterdam where Xaviera was a lonely only child, always competing with her mother for the love and appreciation of her father. She even became Holland’s top secretary and soon relocated to South Africa where she met “Mr. Right” who invited her to come and live with him in New York. There she had a great but underpaid job as the secretary to the Dutch Consul. Once her relationship was over, she continued to work for the Dutch Consul but she started moonlighting as a part time hooker to compensate her meagre salary. It became a full time career which soon put her directly at the centre of a major NYPD crooked cop scandal.

She wrote the book the Happy Hooker with Robin Moore, of ‘Green Berets’ and ‘French Connection’ fame. Her book was published in 1971 and became a world wide bestseller overnight. It sold over 14 million copies world wide.

This documentary tells the haunting story of her early life in the concentration camps, her sensational blitz career from call girl to Madame, but most of all it shows how she was persecuted by the American law and became involved in one of America's most famous crime commissions. It also deals with her symbiotic relationship with her mother.

The international publicity and her involvement in the crime commission scandal instantly turned Xaviera into one of the top icons of the sexual revolution in the world. After ‘The Happy Hooker,’ she wrote another 16 autobiographic books and sex guides. She has been in a monogamous married situation with her Dutch man Philip for the last 3 years.

Her book, “The Happy Hooker,” is being turned into a musical!
Xaviera is always reinventing herself!

‘Happy Hooker’ documentary not what one might expect:

April 30, 2009 www.buffaloniagarafilmfestival.com Entertainment, Movies

As far as artistic inspiration go, Xaviera Hollander presents about as broad and vibrant a muse as can be had.The legendary call girl-turned-author could fill 50 films with her X-rated exploits alone, but documentarian Robert Dunlap chose not to focus solely on that part of her life.
That’s not to say that “Portrait of a Sexual Revolutionary” lacks for ribaldry, but as far as films about the author of the largely autobiographical best-seller “The Happy Hooker” go, this is about as sterile as the subject matter could be treated.

With Hollander narrating the 68-minute film, which will be shown during the Buffalo Niagara Film Festival, the documentary goes all the way back to her infancy, which was spent in a Japanese concentration camp in southeast Asia (she and her family are of Jewish heritage).
After the war, the family returned to Holland, where she grew up (kinda) normally. She claimed the “Miss Tick” prize as Holland’s best secretary, then made her way to New York City, where she took a secretarial job that failed to offer much fulfillment.

Instead, as the title of her first book suggests, she took an unorthodox route to happiness. The film uses commentary from several of today’s leading experts and writers in the field to discuss the impact of “Happy Hooker” and the dozens of follow-up books (both fiction and fact) that came from Hollander.
Where such a field was considered beyond taboo in those days (her lawyer recalled his experiences negotiating his “first book deal in a … house of ill repute”), her work was considered a key part of the feminist movement that opened people’s minds on the subject.

The film takes the viewer up to present day, with Hollander happily pursuing her artistic endeavors back in the Netherlands — receiving inspiration the same way she inspired so many others during her life.
To be clear: This film is not for youngsters, due to subject matter and some of the imagery presented. But it’s the film’s inspiration that dictates the use of such material, and Dunlap does a masterful job of avoiding gratuitous footage or soundbites when it would have been ever-so-easy to go that way.
Whatever one might think about Hollander or her career choice, viewers of this film will leave the experience feeling as far away from dirty as possible.

SEX WITH PETE: MAY 28, 29, 30

After his much younger girlfriend leaves him for a better looking, richer, more successful friend of his, Searles dissolves into a gibbering, chain-smoking, suicidal insomniac! In desperation he resorts to the latest new-age self-help healing therapy: e.f.t. (Emotional Freedom Technique) regressing him into a voyage of self re-discovery - where buried memories of past relationships, one-night stands and a very confused childhood - all come bubbling to the surface withhilarious, painful and revelatory results!

This is a true-life tale of one mans journey into his sexual past… that at the age of 47 (and single again) turns into a quest for enlightenment and love… and maybe next time a beautiful young blonde comes floating into the bar, he might think twice (but probably not!)

"Really enjoyable, kick off your shoes, sit back and listen to this well informed, well traveled and very funny entertainer. Highly recommended."

The Entertainment Program GLR

"In the mid 1980's, Peter Searles went to South America and ended up in Chile . This wonderful and timely one-man play tells the story of the time he spent there. Delivered raconteur-style, direct to the audience, with no props save his own malleable face, Searles has you in the palm of his hand from the moment he opens his mouth... a natural story-teller and talented comedian; everything
about the show is understated and spot-on, including the music.

Nijinsky’s Last Dance

Nijinsky’s Last Dance by Norman Allen is a one-man drama featuring an outstanding tour-de-force performance by the mesmerizing Ricardo Melendez as the tortured dance great, Vaslav Nijinsky

Vaslav Nijinsky, one of the greatest male tortured dancers of all time, was discovered at the tender age of 9. As with many child protégées, the pressure of living in a whirlwind of fame and excitement proved too much for the young star. In less than 90 minutes, the play moves in and out of the dark mind of Nijinsky to tell the story of his rise from obscurity to fame as a young dancer with the Russian Ballet; his innovative dance style that changed the face of modern dance; and his ultimate and tragic descent into madness.

Ricardo Melendez is utterly believable as the unstable and slightly crazed Nijinsky.
Creating a sense of incredible vulnerability, he encapsulates the audience as he tumbles back on a journey retelling the colorful tale through the dancer’s eyes.

“I am Nijinksky, I am Nijinsky, I am…”. This recurring statement evokes a feeling of pity and sorrow as the dancer moves the audience through his extraordinary life with the view that the world makes greater demands than simply the talent that is given by God.

Melendez powers on through the difficult tale, moving swiftly from one character to the next, creating an easily identifiable persona for each. His rippling body tackles this intense piece of physical theatre with ease, and his talent as both dancer and actor leads to an unforgettable performance.

One would believe that they are in the presence of the troubled man himself. Melendez is Nijinksky.

The life and career of Vaslav Nijinsky was as tragic as it was brilliant. Born in 1890, the Russian dancer blazed a trail across Europe, leaping higher and moving quicker than anyone before. Behind the glamorous parties and regal premieres, however, lay a fragile ego and caged artistic genius.

Climbing under the skin of this most complex of men is no mean feat, but Ricardo Melendez spends an hour immersed in Nijinsky's life. On a simple stage, draped with white linen cloths, Melendez takes us from Nijinsky's childhood in St Petersburg to his glory days in Sergei Diaghilev's Ballet Russe. He starts and ends with the tragic vision of this once great dancer, broken and near hysterical in a psychiatric hospital. It's a life story filled with passion and longing. Desperate to hold and, more crucially, be held by the beautiful women who surrounded him, Nijinsky had to forgo such pleasures for the sake of his career. Instead his nights were spent pleasuring Diaghilev and his "saggy bottom".

All of the main players in Nijinsky's life are brought to life by Melendez, with a simple change in stance or voice. It's a script which demands much of its performer - not least the Russian accent - but Melendez rises to the challenge admirably. A former dancer himself, with Alvin Ailey among others, he moves beautifully, albeit in a rather restricted space.Posing to have his picture painted, Melendez strips down to reveal a statuesque body. It is a moving scene which epitomizes Nijinsky's entire personality - well- founded conceit mixed with an almost pathetic vulnerability.

Melendez brilliantly portrays Nijinsky as well as nearly a dozen others who populated the great dancer’s life. The characters include Nijinsky’s lover Sergei Diaghilev, prima ballerina Tamara Karsavina, and artistic champion Auguste Rodin. Through the passionate telling of his own rise and fall, Nijinsky offers his audience a glimpse into a world descending into the chaos of World War I and the challenges facing an artist during this turbulent time.

A one man tour-de-force that delves into the psyche of dance legend, Vaslav Ricardo Melendez (Nijinsky) is originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico and he holds a BA from Butler University and an MFA from Brooklyn College. His acting credits include Hamlet at Theatre 22 and A View From the Bridge at the Gershwin Theatre both in New York City. Regional credits include Becket or the Honor of God, Twelfth Night, Love Valour, Compassion, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. As a dancer, Ricardo is the former Artistic Director of the Ballets De San Juan and has performed with the Alvin Ailey Dance Ensemble Ballet Hispanico of New York and others. He served as principal dancer and Assistant Artistic Director for Dance Kaleidoscope in Indianapolis. He has choreographed for shows all over the world. Ricardo is a member of Actors Equity Association and currently teaches at the Governor's School for the Arts.

ADRES ONBEKEND
