Vaslav Nijinsky, one of the greatest male tortured dancers of all time, was discovered at the tender age of 9. As with many child protégées, the pressure of living in a whirlwind of fame and excitement proved too much for the young star. In less than 90 minutes, the play moves in and out of the dark mind of Nijinsky to tell the story of his rise from obscurity to fame as a young dancer with the Russian Ballet; his innovative dance style that changed the face of modern dance; and his ultimate and tragic descent into madness.

Ricardo Melendez is utterly believable as the unstable and slightly crazed Nijinsky.
Creating a sense of incredible vulnerability, he encapsulates the audience as he tumbles back on a journey retelling the colorful tale through the dancer’s eyes.

“I am Nijinksky, I am Nijinsky, I am…”. This recurring statement evokes a feeling of pity and sorrow as the dancer moves the audience through his extraordinary life with the view that the world makes greater demands than simply the talent that is given by God.

Melendez powers on through the difficult tale, moving swiftly from one character to the next, creating an easily identifiable persona for each. His rippling body tackles this intense piece of physical theatre with ease, and his talent as both dancer and actor leads to an unforgettable performance.

One would believe that they are in the presence of the troubled man himself. Melendez is Nijinksky.

The life and career of Vaslav Nijinsky was as tragic as it was brilliant. Born in 1890, the Russian dancer blazed a trail across Europe, leaping higher and moving quicker than anyone before. Behind the glamorous parties and regal premieres, however, lay a fragile ego and caged artistic genius.

Climbing under the skin of this most complex of men is no mean feat, but Ricardo Melendez spends an hour immersed in Nijinsky's life. On a simple stage, draped with white linen cloths, Melendez takes us from Nijinsky's childhood in St Petersburg to his glory days in Sergei Diaghilev's Ballet Russe. He starts and ends with the tragic vision of this once great dancer, broken and near hysterical in a psychiatric hospital. It's a life story filled with passion and longing. Desperate to hold and, more crucially, be held by the beautiful women who surrounded him, Nijinsky had to forgo such pleasures for the sake of his career. Instead his nights were spent pleasuring Diaghilev and his "saggy bottom".

All of the main players in Nijinsky's life are brought to life by Melendez, with a simple change in stance or voice. It's a script which demands much of its performer - not least the Russian accent - but Melendez rises to the challenge admirably. A former dancer himself, with Alvin Ailey among others, he moves beautifully, albeit in a rather restricted space.Posing to have his picture painted, Melendez strips down to reveal a statuesque body. It is a moving scene which epitomizes Nijinsky's entire personality - well- founded conceit mixed with an almost pathetic vulnerability.

Melendez brilliantly portrays Nijinsky as well as nearly a dozen others who populated the great dancer’s life. The characters include Nijinsky’s lover Sergei Diaghilev, prima ballerina Tamara Karsavina, and artistic champion Auguste Rodin. Through the passionate telling of his own rise and fall, Nijinsky offers his audience a glimpse into a world descending into the chaos of World War I and the challenges facing an artist during this turbulent time.

A one man tour-de-force that delves into the psyche of dance legend, Vaslav Ricardo Melendez (Nijinsky) is originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico and he holds a BA from Butler University and an MFA from Brooklyn College. His acting credits include Hamlet at Theatre 22 and A View From the Bridge at the Gershwin Theatre both in New York City. Regional credits include Becket or the Honor of God, Twelfth Night, Love Valour, Compassion, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. As a dancer, Ricardo is the former Artistic Director of the Ballets De San Juan and has performed with the Alvin Ailey Dance Ensemble Ballet Hispanico of New York and others. He served as principal dancer and Assistant Artistic Director for Dance Kaleidoscope in Indianapolis. He has choreographed for shows all over the world. Ricardo is a member of Actors Equity Association and currently teaches at the Governor's School for the Arts.

Xaviera Hollander, since 34 years part time resident of Amsterdam as well as Marbella - Costa del Sol - , lover of the arts, at long last will be able to live out her dream and produce this haunting theatre performance about the life of the world famous ballet dancer Nijinsky.

Xaviera, author of a.o. the Happy Hooker and another 18 books, has been producing English language theatre in Amsterdam for the last ten yearsand is finally expanding to Southern Spain. Since many years she visits each summer the Edinburgh theatre festival where she handpicks her favorite plays. She recently got married to Philip de Haan, who is her right hand man in most projects she undertakes. She is always reinventing herself so she says about herself. Presently she runs a fun and bohemian style bed and breakfast in Amsterdam and is writing a Total autobiography about her life called “WALL TALK – if only the walls could talk.“

Last year she met Sherry Midas, who has produced many a play in England as well as on the Costa del Sol. She has moved from London to Spain and is trying to introduce a cultural exchange between Spain and anywhere else in the world to promote art in all forms: music , dance and theatre. Well…the inevitable happened , these two most energetic and dynamic ladies, who both love the “spoken word “so much, have decided to team up and bring some exciting and top quality theater to Marbella.

62_huib-rooymansCarol van Herwijnen en Huib Rooymans kruipen in de huid van twee bevriende zakenmannen die elkaar schrijven, totdat Hitler aan de macht komt. Max Eisenstein is een joodse Amerikaan van Duitse afkomst en Martin Schultze een naar Duitsland teruggekeerde zakenman, die samen een kunst galerie in San Francisco hadden.

De brief wisseling tussen hen stopt abrupt wanneer Martin in de ban raakt van Hitler en wanneer Max's zus naar Berlijn gaat en de zaken een dramatische wending krijgen. Max zint op wraak. Het is de meest effectieve aanklacht tegen het nazisme dat in druk is verschenen schreef New York Bookreview over deze roman.

Dit indringend en beklemmend verhaal over de teloorgang van vriendschap en menswaardige ideologie en over de opkomst van vijandschap zag in 1938 al het daglicht. Story, het Amerikaanse maandblad, waarin dit verhaal in 1938 verscheen, was direct uitverkocht.

In Nazi Duitsland stond "Address Unknown" op de lijst van verboden boeken. En na de oorlog toen de gruweldaden voorbij waren, was er geen publiek meer voor deze ooit tijdige waarschuwing. Katherine Kressmann is de auteur van Adres Onbekend. Zij was destijds tekst schrijfster voor 140_carol-van-herwijneneen Amerikaans reclamebureau. Haar vader was van Duitse afkomst. Zij had literaire ambities. De novelle verscheen onder het pseudoniem Kressmann Taylor, de naam van haar echtgenoot, omdat haar man en de uitgever het te krachtig vonden om onder een vrouwennaam te publiceren.

Ze werd geinspireerd toen enkele intellectuele vrienden naar Duitsland terugkeerden en zich in korte tijd tot het nazisme bekeerden. Kressmann begreep dat niet en begon alles over Hitler te lezen, ze ontdekte vreselijke dingen .Weinig Amerikanen waren zich daar van bewust, de meeste kon het niets schelen.

Ze besloot te schrijven over wat de nazi's deden en het Amerikaanse publiek te laten zien wat er met echte, levende mensen gebeurt wanneer ze worden meegesleept door een perverse ideologie.

In 1995 gaf Story Press, ter herdenking van de vijftigste verjaardag van de Bevrijding , het tot Amerikaanse klassieker gepromoveerde boekje opnieuw uit. De novelle is intussen in veel talen vertaald, vorig jaar werd er een toneelstuk op gebaseerd. Het is een klassieker. Samen gebald en machiavellistisch, met een verrassend hoog werkelijkheids en waarheidsgehalte. Goed opgebouwd met zinnen als in steen gebeiteld.

David Henry Sterry is both writer of and performer in the one-man show Chicken, based on his San Francisco Chronicle bestselling memoir Chicken: Self-Portrait of a Young Man . He is also the author of Satchel Sez: the Wit Wisdom & World of Leroy "Satchel" Paige (Crown, Random House, 2001). His next book will be Putting Your Passion into Print (Workman Press, 2004). Two of his stories are featured in 5 Minute Erotica (Running Press, 2003). He has written for, among others, The London Times, Penthouse, The Hairy Orangutan, The Scotsman, and The SF Chronicle.

He started as a stand-up comedian in SF, performing with everyone from Robin Williams to Milton Berle. As an actor he has worked everywhere from Lincoln Center to the Magic Theater, with everyone from Will Smith to Michael Caine, David Letterman, to Zippy the Chimp.

He has been a TV pitchman for AT&T, Levis, and Isuzu, performed in over 500 commercials, winning 4 Clios. He starred in CTW/HBOís Emmy Award-winning Encyclopedia, and was the emcee at Chippendale's Male Strip Club in New York, winning Cabaret Performer of the Year.

His plays have been performed at PS 122, the West Bank Café, and the Duplex. He has written screenplays for Disney, Fox, and Nickelodeon Pictures. He has worked as a chicken, a chicken frier, a paperboy, a soda jerk, a cherry picker, a poet, a building inspector, a limo driver, a baby sitter, a barker, a women ís soccer coach, and a marriage counselor. He graduated from Reed College, and loves his wife, his cat, and any sport involving a ball. David Henry Sterry has been featured in (among others): The New York Times, The London Times, The Sunday Times, Sunday Independent, The Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, The Washington Post, New York Magazine, Elle Magazine, Details Magazine, CBS 48 Hours, NBC The Other Half, BBC Radio, BBC Scotland and Newcastle, and NPR Morning Edition,Weekend Edition, and Talk of the Nation. He recently completed a twenty-five city international tour of Chicken.

The book is being optioned to be made into a film. It was published in the UK in April, 2003, and is coming out in Dutch, German, Croatian, and Spanish. The show, at the Assembly Rooms of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August, 2003, was named the Number 1 play in Great Britain by The Independent.

Because of his life on the streets, he now volunteers doing outreach with homeless kids on the streets of San Francisco, and running writing workshops with people from the sex industry. In July, 2003, he was a speaker, and ran a writing workshop at the "Breaking the Silence" Youth Summit in Washington, hosted by the Department of Justice, GEMS and the US Campaign against the Commercial Exploitation of Children, 17-22 year old survivors from all over the country gathered to try and change the world.

As he stirs up the secret ingredients of his Molocheya, Zohar leads us on the journey of a young man trying to fight for the love of a mother he adored and hated at the same time.

Witness his secret spites and petty grudges, his terrible innermost secrets and above all, his enduring love and awe for his mother, the woman who fed his heart, mind and soul until the very day she died, reaching for an unreturned hug from her hospital bed. In a bid to ease his terrible guilt and reach some kind of reconciliation with his dead mother, the son prepares her favorite dish, Molocheya, on the anniversary of her death. It will be the first time he has tasted the dish in 50 years, having avoided its consumption out of sheer spite and bitterness since his early boyhood.

Like the soup, Zohar brings his audience slowly to the boil with a tremendously inspired performance that is as professional as anything you will ever see on stage. You will be hooked from the moment you enter until the moment you leave and although you are all eager to go out to the bar for a taste of the famous Molechaya soup, a little part of you wants to call “more , more”.

Nessim Zohar - Playwright and performer:

Nessim Zohar was born in Egypt and immigrated to Israel in 1950. He started his acting career with the Haifa repertory company. Receiving a grant for most promising young actor, he lived for some years in New York where he attended the H.B. Professional acting workshop and studied filmmaking at the N.Y.U.

During his long career he played leads and major roles in all the repertory theaters in Israel, appeared on television radio and films. He has written scripts for film and theater and published a collection of short stories. “My Mother’s Soup” is the third one-man show he has written and produced.

Nathan Datner - Director:

Nathan Datner was born in Ramat Gan, and has for the past 25 years starred in all major companies off Israeli Theater. His directing career includes “ Sweet Charity”, “Guys and Dolls”, for acting studios,“Snapshots of a marriage” at Habima National theater, which he also translated and adapted. The musicals “Aladin” and “Cinderella”, he directed for independent producers and lately the Israeli rock opera “Dorian Grey” for the Prague opera house.

Al bij binnenkomst komen de exotische geuren van het Midden Oost je tegemoet,die je onmiddellijk naar Alexandria in Egypte vervoeren.

Gebaseerd op Nessim Zohar’s levensverhaal is dit een betoverende, ontroerende, spannende en humoristische one man show; met herinneringen aan zijn bijna idyllische kindertijd in Alexandria. Terwijl hij op het podium de geheime ingrediënten door zijn Molocheya roert, beroert hij onze harten met het verhaal van de jonge Zohar die vecht voor de liefde van zijn moeder waar hij dol op is en die hij tevens haat. Het zal de eerste keer zijn in vijftig jaar dat hij dit gerecht weer proeft want uit pure wrok en bitterheid heeft hij sinds zijn vroege jeugd deze soep geweigerd te eten.

Net als Molocheya weet hij het publiek op fenomenale en inspirerende wijze tot kookhoogte te brengen. Vanaf het moment dat u de geuren ruikt van de soep die Nessim bereidt en de acteur in actie ziet bent u ‘hooked’ aan deze fascinerende en onvergetelijke voorstelling.
